¡¡¡¡General information

Zhangjiajie UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the mountainous area of the western region of Hunan Province, China, with a subtropical humid mansoon climate. It covers an area of 397 square kilometres, in which forest coverage reaches up to 98%. The outstanding landscape is dominated with more than 3000 peaks and pillars of quartz sandstone, which are rare in the world for their large number, height and fairly pure composition. In the long Chinese history, it has been honored as ¡°the most fantastic mountain under heaven¡± and ¡°a living Chinese landscape painting¡±. It is also the home to a number of endangered plants and animal species. It is these high geological, geomorphic, biological, ecological and aesthetic values that made it the first national forest park in 1982, a World Natural Heritage recognized by UNESCO in 1992, and a global geopark in 2004.

Zhangjiajie is also known as a "cultural melting pot" because there are more than 17 ethnic groups living in the area. The abundant and profound culture in relation to the surrounding environment is vividly shown in a famous performance called ¡°Charming Xiang Xi¡±, which has made Zhangjiajie a National Culture Industry Demonstration Base. This, together with the fast ecotourism development in Zhangjiajie Global Geopark, has attracted more and more visitors from inside China and aboard. As recorded in recent years, around 6 million tourists visited Zhangjiajie UNESCO Global Geoaprk, generating a lot of revenue for the region.
