The fourth session of the training program for Tujia Embroidery of Wulingyuan District, themed “Master & Heritage”, opened in Zhangjiajie on November 22, 2016. Li Cizhong, Deputy Director of Zhangjiajie Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Film, Press, and Publication, Ou Fangyan, Deputy Chairman of the Women’s Federation of Zhangjiajie, Liu Yaoping, Director of Zhangjiajie Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, attended the opening ceremony of the program, along with Xie Guixiang, member of the standing CPC committee of Wulingyuan District and Director of Publicity. Also present at the ceremony were 80 local female embroiderers, as well as the head of relevant institutions.
During the event, the head of Guaiyaomei Co., Ltd., a Zhangjiajie-based company focusing on developing Tujia embroidery, gave an introduction to the training program.
Tujia embroidery means “coverage of native flowers” in the local language. It stands out among the intangible cultural heritage of the Tujia people, which is one of the four most famous embroidery in China.
Co-organized by Zhangjiajie Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Film, Press, and Publication, and the Women’s Federation of Zhangjiajie, the training program for Tujia Embroidery of Wulingyuan District, themed “Master & Heritage”, is co-organized by Zhangjiajie Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Film, Press, and Publication, the district-level Women’s Federation, and Bureau of Labor and Employment of Wulingyuan District. Aimed for deeper integration of tourism and culture and better protection of traditional craftsmanship of Tujia embroidery, the program is designed to help the Tujia people in rural areas to increase their income.
Trainees who have completed the one-month program will receive the certificate of completion. Those who are qualified can work in the Guaiyaomei production base of Tujia embroidery. At the end of the program, the company will hold a competition for excellent works of trainees, in which six winners will be given the honorary title of Tujia Embroidery Expert and be rewarded 10,000 yuan.
With a total investment of over six million yuan, the project of Tujia embroidery is Wulingyuan’s key project of poverty reduction through industrialization in 2016. It is estimated that the project will achieve a sale of 10 million yuan, with an attributable profit of 1.58 million yuan, which will increase the total income of the local poverty-stricken family by 1.264 million yuan, with an increase in per capita income of over 850 yuan.
