Danxiashan UGGp is located in the northeast of Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province of China, with an area of 292 km2, and is the place where the geomorphic term of Danxia Landform was defined. On February 14, 2004, together with seven other Chinese national geoparks of Zhangjiajie, Huangshan, Lushan, Stone Forest, Songshan, Yuntaishan and Wudalianchi, Danxiashan became the first group of the members of GGN. In August 2010, Danxiashan was designated by UNESCO as a site of world natural heritage, becoming a world-famous mountain with double designations.
Danxiashan UGGp is formed of red glutenite, exhibiting broadly a structure of peak forest with red layers. Red walls and red cliffs are the most essential morphological characteristics, and more than 600 stone peaks, stone castles, stone walls and stone columns of different sizes and shapes were formed by them. The main peak of Danxiashan is 618 m above sea level, while most of the peaks lie between 300-400 m. From the top to the bottom, the rocks jag considerably, lie in an ordered fashion and vary dramatically in shapes. The spectacular landscapes formed in Danxiashan UGGp are just like a garden sculptured by rubies, and consequently the name of Danxiashan was given long time ago. It is also known as "China¡¯s Redstone Park", and has very high values of geomorphology, stratigraphy, ecology, science-teaching, tourism, landscape, history and culture. For many years, Zhangjiajie UGGp and Danxiashan UGGp have taken the protection and sustainable development of the geoparks as own duties, and have long persisted in experts think-tanks sharing, heritage monitoring and experience sharing on global geopark management and evaluations. Typically, both global geoparks together with other geoparks have advocated and organized the exhibition of sister geoparks in each of the participated geoparks on Earth Day and during the geopark week of the Asia-Pacific geoparks network for the first and second times, and many other activities. By doing so, both global geoparks have provided quality of service on science popularization to local residents and tourists, and set up a platform on tourism destination exchange. In addition, tourism enterprises in both sides have also interacted actively, making great efforts to enhance the level of customers swapping and market sharing. With the development of the official relationship of sister geoparks, it can be expected that these activities will be much advanced in the future.
